Not every sequel can be worthy enough to build upon a movie of such high regard but, to crank everything loved about that film to an entirely new magnitude is staggeringly done here. ‘SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ is a breath of visual and emotional fresh air for not only the Spider-Verse series but for animated films in general.

This film is four passionate years in the making and it shows, with every shot being a visual grandeur. The animation we see in this selection is a contrive of hundreds of different art styles that all come together to reflect a broad vision. But the true artistry is not just in the animation, it’s the powerful storytelling and moving emotional core that really make this film special.

There’s never a dull moment free of a laugh or a smile with ‘SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ but simultaneously, it makes sure to take its time with meaningful content so that it can flow naturally throughout the more intense sequences. And we see a lot of each, with both nail-biting and awe-inspiring sequences. Having this balance goes on par with the tone in general, which is much more mature and darker than the last.

Shameik Moore returns once again to crush it as Miles, growing with the character as he has grown over time. Hailee Steinfeld delivers an excellent performance as Gwen Stacy in this film, which is just as much hers now as it is Miles’. And with more Spider-Verse, comes more Spider-People, and It’s impossible not to love the crazy amount of new ones we see here. Oscar Isaac steals the show as the unhinged Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara, who is the center-stone of this story. Along with Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk who is such a lovable portrayal, and Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar.

But with the endless Spider-Man lore, meticulous complexity, and triumph within this newly introduced story, there’s even more to come. In fact, an entire second part of this film, ‘SPIDER-MAN BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE’. So, while the bar is raised through the roofs, there’s unfinished business to tend to on March 29, 2024.

Until then, let’s enjoy the testament to the power of storytelling, and the true celebration of Spider-Man we have in ‘SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE’ releasing in theaters Friday, June 2nd!
